SBCC Lunch Break Big Band

Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) Lunch Break Jazz Band continues to be one of the finest jazz ensembles in the state.  The SBCC Lunch Break Band is the only Community College band to be selected as a finalist for the Monterey Next Gen Jazz Festival for three consecutive years. They have won numerous awards at the Reno International Jazz Festival and continue to garner awards throughout the nation.  The Lunch Break Big Band is one of three big bands at SBCC.

Director James Mooy holds music and education degrees from UCLA (B.A. and M.A.). His trumpet performance studies have been with Jimmy Valves, Ron Thompson, Tony Plog, and Mario Guarneri. Mr. Mooy conducts the award winning Lunch Break Jazz Ensemble, and the 70-piece Symphony Orchestra at Santa Barbara City College. Under his leadership, the SBCC Lunch Break Jazz Ensemble was one of 6 finalist bands chosen for the Monterey Next Gen Jazz Festival for three consecutive years. He is a Music Academy of the West alumnus and has toured the US and Japan as a professional trumpet player. In 2017 he conducted the SCSBOA Honor Jazz Ensemble at the NAMM show and SCSBOA convention in Anaheim.  He also served as a clinician for the 2017 Reno Jazz Festival.
